ResistaMist
Lysozyme Spray
DESCRIPTION
ResistaMist, by Douglas Laboratories, provides
a unique enzyme called lysozyme in a lemonflavored
oral spray to support the immune
system. †
FUNCTIONS
In 1922, lysozyme was isolated from hen
egg white (albumin) due to its’ high
lysozyme content, which functions to protect
the yolk. Every living organism produces
lysozyme; in humans, it is found in tears,
saliva, digestive organs, reproductive
organs, and mother’s milk.
Lysozyme is a specific enzyme found in the
body that demonstrates catalytic activity (the
ability to facilitate chemical reactions).
These chemical reactions may include
altering the structure of cell wall
polysaccharides, and interfering with
attachment and entry of organisms into the
cell. Extensive studies over the years have
demonstrated that lysozyme has catalytic
activity on a series of microorganisms.
Lysozymes are closely related to alphalactalbumin
in sequence and structure,
making them part of the same family.
Mucous membranes are a key component of
the innate immune system and serve to
protect the body, especially in the mouth and
nasal passages. The protective properties of
the mucous membranes (saliva) are
dependent upon the action of several factors,
including the acitivity of lysozyme. The
protective properties of mucous membranes
can be compromised from low humidity in
the winter season and environmental and
physical stressors, resulting in the need for
additional support.
On the basis of toxicological data obtained
from numerous clinical studies, local and
systemic intolerance of lysozyme have not
become apparent. Lysozyme has been
traditionally used for over 50 years in Asia
and Europe for a variety of conditions.
Moreover, lysozyme has been successfully
used in topical products to support wound
healing and oral care. †
Lysozyme has been affirmed as GRAS
(Generally Recognized as Safe).
